At Prince of Peace Lutheran School, we offer a different Enrichment Class every day of the week. These classes are intended to provide students with opportunities to explore and hone their talents in technology, music and the arts. Children are quicker to learn new subject matter than adults, as their brains are still accepting information at a rapid pace as it develops. To ensure that all students gain a well-rounded education, Art, Music, Physical Education, Computer and Spanish classes are provided. Enrichment Classes support personal, social and academic growth.
Art education increases awareness of self (mind, body, and voice) and others (collaboration and empathy), improves clarity and creativity in the communication of verbal and nonverbal ideas and gives a deeper understanding of human behavior, motivation, diversity, culture, and history. Art has the power to change the way we think and the way we understand the world around us. It can be used to visually express one's faith. The power of art can bring faith to life as well as instill culture and appreciation for history.
Research has found that learning music facilitates learning other subjects and enhances skills that children inevitably use in other areas. Prince of Peace students attend music class once a week. Students sing at chapel services and perform at the Christmas program and Spring program. We believe music learning supports all learning. Students are also given the opportunity to participate in the Church's RIngTin program, which teaches children to play chimes in a performance group. Here they can learn early music-reading skills, and performance basics as they perform monthly at one of our services.
Physical Education instills self-discipline, high personal standards, positive attitudes, and a quest for excellence. In PE students learn to improve reaction times, cardiovascular capacity, muscle strength, body coordination, speed, and stress responses. Even daily recess can improve cognition and academic outcomes. At Prince of Peace, we have twice-daily, outdoor recess (weather permitting) and Physical Education once a week.
Is Computer Class important in the very young? Absolutely! During computer class, students learn how to respect computers. They learn the fundamentals and basic programs. Technology is all around us! It is said that learning with technology helps create a learning environment where individuals are more confident and productive!
When it comes to education, children process information on levels that are different from adults and can be taught a variety of subjects. Learning to speak Spanish in youth is no different as they tend to retain what they have learned with greater accuracy. Giving a child a head-start in today’s world by learning Spanish can be beneficial in a number of ways. Learning to hear and speak in ways that differ from their primary language opens their minds to the larger world and helps them succeed throughout life. Students can develop a talent for linguistic skills early on that can benefit learning other languages later in life.
